Sheff Wed Faces a 'Significant Problem', States New Football Authority

'We are going to be a part of football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

The team's ongoing struggles are seen as a "major concern" and the new football authority is looking to gain the ability to examine team situations in similar circumstances, the newly appointed chairman David Kogan has declared.

In a wide-ranging interview, the regulator, who was appointed on Monday, voiced concern towards the club's followers.

The chairman convened with four supporters' associations connected to the Championship side this week.

The Championship side have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in the current year, with the club missing wage payments on five separate occasions, including in the autumn.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a serious issue for football authorities and a substantial concern for English football," the regulator explained.

"Sheffield Wednesday is one of the great brands for English football and in recent days we have met supporters' organizations.

"We're now looking to get powers... which will allow us to have Sheffield Wednesday - and other clubs submitted for our review if they warrant scrutiny and addressed."

Economic Challenges and Ownership Situation

Wednesday's embattled owner the current owner stated during the off-season he would be open to selling the club at their home ground, but he has not been able to secure a deal with interested parties.

Delayed salary payments on time in spring months led to sanctions by the league officials in mid-year, preventing the club from carrying out any player acquisitions for the next three transfer windows, although the ban was rescinded in late summer.

Official's Viewpoint

Kogan said: "Our role exists to serve the supporters of Wednesday, Bury or any football club where fans are dedicated to a community organization that has been part of their lives in multiple situations.

"I fully appreciate the club's situation, as I do for every team that since 1992 have gone to the wall, or been close to going to the wall, for causes separate from the followers."

When asked if the oversight body could require an chairman to relinquish a club if they are judged inappropriate, the chairman responded: "Should the inquiry concern 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we assemble the facts and know what's going on, we will."

But Kogan stressed that forcing owners to sell clubs would be considered the final option and the authority would rather to cooperate with proprietors.

"The final option we would consider is commence engagement with an particular organization, an particular chairman, without having the opportunity to collaborate with that proprietor to address the issues that the club's facing and the proprietor's dealing with," Kogan said.

"However, realistically, when you look back over the history of the sport, over the past few decades there have been particular chairmen, not many, but particular people who have shown negligence in the approach they have taken toward their organizations and finally decline to assume obligation for the future."

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

Kogan met with delegates from multiple organizations to lay out the remit of the regulator on Wednesday and stated it constituted a "forward-thinking discussion" with a "high level of engagement" from the grassroots to elite level.

"The role holds considerable importance, because should mistakes occur, if the sport makes errors, the remarkable development accomplished might evaporate incredibly quickly," Kogan said.

"This represents everyone's worst fear in the realm of domestic football is a huge success story - we've got to keep it going.

"Considerable investment flowing into the game and has been invested for the past two decades, because there are no assurances it will keep flowing into the sport, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to adopt a precise perspective on challenges and obviously, of the next two or three years."

Top Flight Apprehensions

Top flight officials resisted the formation of an authority because of fears of a negative impact on the elite division's competitive balance, but the regulator stated: "I completely endorse the prosperity and expansion as an financial organization of the Premier League.

"Being fully aware of the concern of undermining the Premier League as a premium product of England. But at the same time, if you consult with top flight officials after the recent gathering, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, in fact, they have been telling us in private they have a significant confidence."

Partisan Associations

The chairman continues to confront a "comprehensive investigation" by the public appointments commissioner after he disclosed making donations to the Labour Party in 2020.

The chairman contributed funds to government minister the politician's campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I have fully disclosed my past party membership [with Labour], and that party membership ceased the day the select committee approved my appointment," Kogan said.

"I currently have no participation in any type of partisan engagement."
