Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
