Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
