An Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Land the Position That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a travel partner. Because my companion was considering starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had arranged a two-week stay there en route to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and began chatting with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I did for a living, and I explained that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I should apply for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but straight off informed my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a city where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his full name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. Moreover, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that gig at Columbia resulted in a role in Europe where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
